Longworth House Office Building

Viewed from atop the dome of the U.S. Capitol, this is the Longworth House Office Building. It is the second of three office buildings on Independence Avenue (across the street from the south end of the Capitol) that host the offices of members of the House of Representatives. According to the Architect of The Capitol “The building was named in 1962 in honor of Nicholas Longworth of Ohio, who served as Speaker of the House of Representatives (1925-1931) when the building was authorized.” Congress authorized the building’s construction in 1929 and it was completed in April 1933. The Supreme Court building, which I posted a picture of earlier in this series, was under construction just a few blocks to the northeast during this time period as well.
